Born in London, England, and awarded the Praemium Imperiale in 2013, world-class architect David Chipperfield made his debut as an architect in Japan. In the 30 years since, Chipperfield has established four offices around the globe and focused largely on public buildings and urban development, and he now counts among his works a small chapel and visitor center for Inagawa Cemetery in Hyogo prefecture. Recognizing Japanese culture in a cemetery that pays tribute to the interred regardless of religious denomination, Chipperfield visited Japan numerous times for the project and oft engaged in dialogues with the client, in the end creating a quiet atmosphere and a building that blends serenely into its natural surroundings. This captivating book is complete with essays by Toshiyuki Horie drifting in and out of surrealism, and with photographer Risaku Suzuki's stunning images of the garden and the architecture as they transform with the seasons.
