EARLY CLOTH TAPA and FELT
Osaka: 8 September – 21 November 2017
Tokyo: 7 December 2017 – 24 February 2018
Tapa and felt are early cloths made by hand employing commonly available plants or wool. Tapa and felt, it is believed, were used long before the technology for weaving was developed.
This exhibition looks at the tapa and felt used in daily life since ancient times in the South Pacific islands and regions of Southeast Asia, and shows the attractiveness of tapa and felt as simple, strong non-woven cloths.
Displayed in the gallery are some 60 precious materials collected by Shigeki Fukumoto, who has commuted to the South Pacific islands for over 30 years to research tapa, and Goro Nagano, who researched pressed felt technologies in Southeast Asia primarily in the 1990s. Visitors will be struck by the toughness of these early cloths and by their designs and textures, which combine boldness and delicacy to attain a beauty symbolic of ethnic culture. Through these non-woven cloths infused with long inherited ethnic traditions and skills, the exhibition offers a chance to have contact with the ancient beginnings of human technology and the arts of dyeing and weaving.
We wish to extend our warmest appreciation to Messrs. Shigeki Fukumoto and Goro Nagano and everyone whose efforts have made this exhibition possible.
