Fire emits heat and light when it burns. Human beings, having acquired the means to start fire, used its light to illuminate darkness, and its heat to alter physical substances and fabricate new things. One of these was earthen pottery, which, it is believed, arose when people took note of the hardened clay ground after a bonfire. Earthen pottery developed into vessels for storing and cooking, and implements for carrying water. Still, several thousands of years would be needed before they evolved into the durable vessels impermeable to water we use today. This is because a combustion heat of 1050 degrees or more, at which clay melts and chemical changes occur, could not be attained in an open fire. Such a fire can only reach temperatures of 700 or 800 degrees. With time, people learned to construct an enclosure around the fire, contain its heat, and continually feed the fire oxygen in the form of a draft. Through several thousands of years, these devices achieved form in “kilns,” “chimneys,” and “bellows.” Using simple natural principles and human strength, such contrivances raised the heat to high temperatures of 1200 to 1400 degrees, from which swords, hard ceramic vessels, and glass were born. As methods of manipulating high heat evolved, the ceramic vessels, swords, and glass transcended function to become objects of great beauty. This exhibition will look at contrivances for “manipulating fire” to awaken strength and beauty—as only objects passed through high heat can possess.
