Naga-ame (long rain), ta-u (frequent rain), kiri-same (drizzle), konuka-ame (fine rain), mura-same (passing shower) . . . The Japanese language has many words to distinguish between different types of rain. Among traditional Japanese paintings, as well, there are numerous works that convey the feelings of affection and delight the Japanese have long held for rain. An inordinate volume of rain falls in the Japanese archipelago, even by world standards, but frequent experiences of rain in daily life have fostered a sophisticated terminology for rain, not to mention many ways of enjoying it. Rain, needless to say, is a blessing without which we cannot live, but it also poses a danger to human life, and the humidity it brings is a source of various ailments. Thinking about contrivances for living in safety and comfort in Japan’s rainy climate has been an important issue for people in this archipelago for as long as they have been building houses. A pitched roof of thatched straw or tiles enables rainwater to flow off the house without leaking inside. Roofs using thatched straw have a steep pitch to enable rain to drain off more easily. Rain has formed the design of the traditional Japanese house. This exhibition will look at examples of human wisdom and contrivances for living with rain from the more than 10,000-year history of houses.
